Turtle Lake is a 196-acre glacial lake in western Becker County, tucked between Lake Park and Hawley, about 15 minutes from downtown Detroit Lakes. It's got a heavily developed, well-loved shoreline and the kind of clear water that makes it easy to see your toes off the dock.

Turtle Lake, and everything around it

A clearwater glacial lake in Lake Park, MN — just outside Detroit Lakes — with fishing, water sports, and a whole different personality once it freezes.

About the lake

Glacial, clear, and 196 acres of it

Turtle Lake was carved by glaciers thousands of years ago, which is a big part of why the water runs so clear today. It sits in western Becker County between Lake Park and Hawley, with a heavily developed shoreline and steady recreational use all summer long.

You're about 15 minutes from downtown Detroit Lakes, one of Minnesota's classic lakes-region destinations, with restaurants, shopping, and Detroit Mountain Recreation Area for hiking and mountain biking beyond the water.

Per the Minnesota DNR, Turtle Lake supports a healthy mixed fishery. Walleye are stocked on a biennial basis, and anglers regularly find:

Meet Robyn & Barry

Minnesota family, small beach, big love for this lake.

Your hosts

Robyn & Barry Tallackson

We're a Minnesota family who fell for this stretch of Turtle Lake the same way most people do — one visit, and we couldn't leave. Robyn writes about the beautiful chaos of raising two boys over at Mud & Mayhem, and this cabin is where a lot of that chaos happens every summer: sandy floors, sunburned shoulders, and a dock that never quite dries out.

We opened the Main Cabin and the A-Frame to guests so more families could have what ours does here — sand between their toes, the kind of core memories that get retold every summer, and a lake that's clear enough to remember why you came up north in the first place.

Booking FAQs

What time is check-in and check-out?

Check-in is 4:00 PM, check-out is 11:00 AM. A late check-out until 1:00 PM is available when the cabin isn't booked for that evening, for a $100 fee — just ask ahead of time.

Can I book the cabins separately?

Yes — the Main Cabin and A-Frame are independent rentals with their own bookings, pricing, and beach frontage. You can also book both together for larger groups.

Are pets allowed?

Yes, with an additional pet deposit plus a $100 one-time pet fee. Let us know when you inquire so we can add it to your reservation.

Is the beach actually sand?

Yes — true sand-bottom, not the mucky lake-bottom you might expect. It's part of why the family fell in love with this spot.

What's included for getting on the water?

Kayaks and paddleboards are included with your stay. Life jackets are provided; please review basic water safety before heading out, especially with kids.
